Judge Defends Light Term in Beating

A Lebanon County judge yesterday affirmed his light sentence for a man…convicted of a beating. A.R. will continue serving his 2 - 4 years in county prison in spite of objections raised by Assistant District Attorney J.G. Judge B.C. said.

{The district attorney} sought to send A.R. to a state prison because he was supposed to be involved in a work release program and he is not. A.R.’s attorney, John Brendan Elbert, of Philadelphia, argued that a doctor recently authorized his client to work…Elbert also contends that work-release was not the reason why {the judge} originally sentenced A.R. to county time.

The judge agreed. ‘I said this the last time. There’s only been two occasions in four-plus years that I’ve ordered a person to serve state time in a local prison’ B.C. said of his May 12th sentencing hearing…I intentionally went easy on Mr. R. I still believe I did the right thing.”

Please note: I was “not” trial counsel BUT I did handle the sentencing and AM handling the appeal.*

Bail Reduced For Teen Charged in Father’s Death

May 9, 2003

CAMDEN, N.J. (AP) Bail was reduced Friday for an 18-year-old who was charged with stabbing her father to death after he allegedly punched her and threw a phone at her, authorities said.

Jasmine T. Karo’s bail was set at $75,000, down from $200,000. Camden County Prosecutor Vincent P. Sarubbi said.

Sarubbi said he decided the reduction was warranted after he reviewed the case with Karo and her attorney, John Elbert.

Sarubbi said an investigation indicated that Karo was assaulted before the stabbing, and that she was not considered a significant flight risk.

Superior Court Judge Linda Baxter approved the new bail.

Karo told authorities her father, Alan Karo, 44, punched her, put her in a headlock and threw her to the floor before she stabbed him Tuesday in their Gloucester City Home.
